Great pickleball isn't about a bigger swing — it's about being in position early. These 7 drills build the footwork that wins rallies.
1. Split-step timing
Hop into a balanced split step every time your opponent contacts the ball. Practice against a wall: toss, split, react.
2. Lateral shuffle lines
Shuffle side-to-side between the sidelines for 30 seconds without crossing your feet. Three sets, resting 20 seconds.
3. Kitchen-line transitions
Practice moving from baseline to non-volley zone in controlled steps, pausing in a split step at each third of the court.
4. Figure-8 cone drill
Two cones, three feet apart. Weave forward and backward in a figure-8 for 30 seconds keeping your chest up.
5. Drop-step recovery
From the kitchen line, drop-step back for a lob, then recover forward. Ten reps each side.
6. Shadow dinking
Dink an imaginary rally while shuffling laterally along the kitchen line — 60 seconds continuous.
7. Jump-rope intervals
Old school and unbeatable for light, quick feet: 3 × 1 minute.
One prerequisite: real court shoes
Every drill above involves lateral force that running shoes can't handle. Train in proper court shoes from our Pickleball & Tennis collection.
