If the PPA Tour is pickleball's version of the golf tour — individuals, week to week, chasing rankings — then MLP is its version of a team league. Same athletes, completely different emotional experience.
What Major League Pickleball actually is
MLP is a team-based professional pickleball league. Instead of players competing purely for themselves, franchises compete against each other across a season, accumulating standings points that determine playoff qualification.
Teams have owners, rosters, home cities, and identities. Players are drafted and traded. There are standings, a postseason, and a champion. That structure barely existed in pickleball a few years ago, and it fundamentally changed who watches the sport and why.
The 2026 season format
The 2026 MLP season, presented by DoorDash, runs May through August 2026, building on momentum from 2025.
Nine regular season events
The calendar features a full slate of nine regular season events, hosted across MLP team cities. Each event runs Thursday through Sunday, with select Friday-through-Monday scheduling on holiday weekends.
Crucially, every team plays five regular-season events — not all nine. Teams don't face identical schedules, and standings points earned at each stop carry real weight toward playoff qualification.
All 20 teams compete at a single level in 2026, a meaningful simplification from earlier tiered structures.
The Mid-Season Tournament
Partway through the season, every team reunites in one place for the Mid-Season Tournament — hosted alongside the Beer City Open in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It's one of the few moments where the entire league is in the same building, and functions as a genuine mid-season checkpoint.
An expanded three-week playoff
The 2026 postseason has been expanded to a three-week playoff structure, culminating in Championship Weekend in New York City.
Putting the finale in New York is a statement of intent. Pickleball's growth has largely been driven by suburban and Sun Belt markets. Staging the championship in Manhattan is the league saying it belongs on the biggest stage in American sports media.
Notable 2026 stops
Regular season events are hosted in MLP team cities, producing genuine home crowds — a detail that matters more than it sounds. A neutral-site tournament has spectators. A home event has fans.

Why the team format changes everything
Here's the argument for why MLP matters, and it has nothing to do with the quality of the pickleball — which is essentially identical to the PPA, because it's largely the same players.
Individual sports ask you to like a person. Team sports let you belong to something.
When you follow an individual athlete, your investment ends when they retire, get injured, or lose early. When you follow a team, the team persists. There are rivalries. There are trades that make you angry. There is a season with a shape — a beginning, a slump, a run, a postseason.
This is the mechanism that made the NBA, the Premier League, and the NFL culturally enormous, and pickleball had none of it until MLP existed. The result: record-setting fan turnout, and an atmosphere measurably different from an individual tournament. People chant. People boo. People care.

The five-of-nine scheduling wrinkle. Because each team plays only five of nine events, schedule strength becomes a real variable. Two teams with identical records may have played meaningfully different slates.
The Grand Rapids reunion. The Mid-Season Tournament is the only regular-season moment where all 20 teams share a venue.
New York. Championship Weekend in NYC is the league's biggest bet. How it lands will say a lot about pickleball's next five years.
